In a clinical trial performed by Medicinal Plants Institute of Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research, with collaboration of research and medical centers in the country, silymarin plant with a dose of 600 mg per day was prescribed for 110 patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, for a four-month period of time. Ultimately, it resulted in a 30 percent decrease in fasting blood glucose, 20 percent in cholesterol and 30 percent in triglyceride.
In another clinical study performed on 60 patients suffering from hepatic damage caused by alcohol abuse, silymarin with a dose of 600 mg per day was prescribed and was held for a 6-month period. After the study was finished the level of FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar), daily blood sugar, glycosuria, glicosine hemoglobin and the need for insulin was reduced.
In another clinical trial on people with chronical hepatic disorders, who received a compound of silymarin (240 mg, 2 times a day), a remarkable reduction was reported in the level of liver enzymes (GGT, ALT, AST) in comparison with placebo.
This product contains extract of milk thistle plant’s seed containing silymarin (a compound of silybin, silychristin, silydianin, etc.), flavonoids (quercetin, taxifolin, etc.), linoleic acid, oleic acid, campesterol, and stigmasterol).
Use two times a day, each time one capsule, with a glass of water.
No prohibition has been reported for use of this product so far.
Some potential side-effects include:
- Those with bilious disorders should consult a doctor before using.
- The product might cause minor diarrhea in some people.
- If using the product simultaneously with hypoglycemic medicine or insulin, the quantity of use should be regulated based on blood glucose level. Silymarin contends with metronidazole and yohimbine, and is recommended not to be used simultaneously with them.
